Six other products, Norton 360 Deluxe for Mac among them, took perfect scores with AV-Test (but weren’t evaluated by AV-Comparatives). At the other end of the scale, Avast and Bitdefender took perfect scores from both labs. I hope future lab reports will see the return of ClamXAV, though it’s true that almost half the macOS antivirus products I track have results from neither lab. Unfortunately, ClamXAV didn’t participate in the very latest test, in December 2021, but it’s good to know that it had certification recently. ClamXAV didn’t fail the latest test-it just wasn’t included. AV-Comparatives and AV-Test also run tests on Mac antivirus tools, and AV-Test Institute until recently certified the effectiveness of ClamXAV's protection. I follow regular reports from four independent antivirus testing labs (AV-Test, MRG-Effitas, AV-Comparatives, and SE Labs) regarding the tested efficacy of Windows antivirus utilities.

A toolbar across the top lets you check for updates, view scan and update logs, and set preferences. When you select a source, buttons to start, stop, or pause a scan become active. If you have other folders needing protection, adding them to the source list is easy. A source list at left included the whole computer, my files, and my user folder, plus Documents, Desktop, and Downloads. Like ProtectWorks and Malwarebytes for Mac Premium, ClamXAV is all about the scans.
Once I found the right spot to drop the icon, it was a snap. The product advised me to open Security & Privacy Settings and drag the ClamXAV icon onto System Preferences. As with any antivirus on a modern macOS version, I had to go through various steps to allow the necessary permissions.
